피조물인 우리 평범한 인간은 주어진 환경과 시간 안에서 무심히 일상의 삶을 흘려 보내야 할 운명을 타고 난 듯 보인다. 하지만 때로는 동시에 그 공간과 유기적 관계를 이루고 있는 자신의 존재감이 강하게 느껴질 때가 있다. 수많은 사람들이 그 공간을 스쳐 지나 갔거나, 또는 지금 함께 있기에 나도 그 중 하나에 불과한 존재처럼 느껴지지만, 사실은 그 공간 안에서 무심히 흘러가는 시간이 아니라 특별한 한 순간을 의미 있게 만드는 생명력을 지닌 창조자로서 강한 에너지를 만들어 내고 있는 것이다. 따라서 우리가 존재하고 있는 공간은 인간과 분리된 단순히 눈에 보이는 3차원적 형태가 아니라, 그 안에 존재했던 그리고 존재하고 있는 것들이 뿜어내는 에너지와 유기적 관계로 이루어진 살아있는 그 무엇이라고 생각이 든다. 그리고 매 순간 과거가 되어 죽어가는 존재들의 에너지들이 그 안에 차곡차곡 축적되고 있다는 느낌이 든다.
나는 이렇게 우리의 일상 속에서 또는 기대하지 못하던 무심한 순간에 특별한 의미로 존재하고 있는 인간, 그로 인해 다시 만들어진 살아있는 공간 그리고 보이지는 않지만 그 안에 유기적으로 흐르고 있는 강한 생명의 에너지를 핀홀 카메라에 담고 싶다. 아마도 어쩌면 이것은 애초에 눈에 보이는 것들을 위해 만들어진 카메라로는 담아낼 수 없는 것인지 모른다. 하지만 나의 핀홀 상자는 눈에 보이는 것들의 집착에서 버렸기에 이러한 것들을 담아낼 수 있으리라 믿는다. 이미지 속에 있는 우리의 모습은 한 여행자로, 주부로, 또는 연인으로 어떠한 모습으로 존재하게 될지 모른다. 하지만 그것은 너무나 무심하고 우연적으로 만들어진 상황에 불과할 뿐, 그 공간 안에 남겨진 본질적 모습은 강한 생명감을 가지고 유기적 에너지를 만들어 내고 있는 특별한 존재인 것이다. 그리고 우리의 형상은 영원히 기억될 운명으로 다시 태어나게 된다.
Using my pinhole camera, I capture the vital energy that flows from people at the moment of the photograph. I believe that I can capture this vitality by giving up an obsession with the visible. The people in my photographs may be recognizable as travelers, housewives, lovers or whatever, but they are essentially recordings of the invisible and vital energy that existed at the moment of the photograph.
While taking pictures of places with my pinhole camera, I came to realize the space we occupy is not simply a three-dimensional visible space that is disconnected from humans. I began to view space as being alive, with an organic relation to everything that exists now and in the past, even though this vitality becomes part of the past and then dies as each moment passes. We are born with a destiny to live our lives as foreigners, passing through each moment as a new place and time given to us by God. But sometimes we feel strongly our presence through the interactive relation with space and generate energy as creators making each moment meaningful with powerful vitality.
