예술가는 그의 작업으로 행복해질 수 있을까. 글쎄 꼭 그렇다라고 장담할 수는 없을 것 같다. 인간의 행복을 만드는 요소는 좀 더 다른 이야기 일 수 있으니까. 하지만 만약 예술가가 그의 작업을 멈춰야 한다면 불행은 그에게 명백한 사실이 될 것이다. 문득 핀홀 카메라를 들고 불행으로부터 그를 막아주는 그 만의 장소를 방문해보고 싶다는 생각이 들었다. 과연 나의 어둠상자는 작은 바늘 구멍하나로 그 곳에 깃든 그의 운명적 에너지를 담아낼 수 있을까.
사진가로 하여금 보이는 것들에 대한 욕망을 자제시켜주는 이 보잘 것 없는 작은 상자는 과연 보이지 않는 것들에 대한 진실을 보여줄 수 있을까. 아니 어쩌면 지금은 이러한 생각조차도 불필요한지 모르겠다. 다만 이 순간 내가 할 수 있는 것은 모든 욕망을 묻어두고 예술가의 방 한 가운데서 핀홀 상자와 함께 잠시 사색을 즐기는 것 뿐 일이라. 그리고 그 작은 상자 안에 일어나고 있는 크고 작은 우연한 화학적 반응들이 가져다줄 신비로운 만남을 기대해보는 것이다.
Can artists be happy by their work? It’s possible or impossible because human being happiness may be related to more complicated elements. But if an artist is not able to continue his work any longer, he will be obviously unhappy as his work is like an irresistible fate. People expect something special in his work and his place as well.
Suddenly, with a pinhole camera I wish to visit his atelier to protect him from this unhappiness. Can this dark box bear his energy through only its tiny pinhole? Can it really show the truth of the invisible, suppressing his desire for the visible? Only human beings among all creatures have their desire for art. What is an artist’s space like? What I can now at this moment is to enjoy peeking at his secret space, giving up my own desire as a photographer. I also expect a mysterious encounter with his spontaneous energy, big or small, in this space through this pinhole box.
