인간의 본질, 나는 그것은 사랑이라고 생각한다. 

오랫동안 인류사를 고찰하며 사색을 통해 얻은 나의 결론이며 작품을 통해서도 이야기해온 작업의 주제이기도 하다,인간은 신이 창조한 피조물들 중에 특별히 그의 영광과 사랑을 나누기 위해 만들어진 축복받은 존재였다. 아담과 이브의 선악과 사건이 발생하지 않았다며 아마도 우리는 지금쯤 에덴동산을 거닐며, 이 세상에서는 알 수 없는 천상의 평안함을 누리며 살고 있을 지도 모르겠다. 하지만 불행하게도 그들은 금단의 열매를 따먹고 용서를 구하기는 커녕 신에게 비겁한 변명과 원망만을 늘어놓고 서로를 배신하는 어리석음으로 에덴동산에서 쫓겨나야 했다. (솔직히 나는 그들이 에덴동산에서 쫓겨 났다기 보다는 그 영광을 누릴 자격을 스스로 상실한 것이 아닐까 생각해 본다.)

 

 이러한 사랑의 배신과 아픔을 경험하고 이 세상에서 고달픈 삶을 살게 된 아담과 이브, 그리고 그들의 자손인 우리는 결국에는 죽음이라는 두려움을 맞이할 수 밖에 없는 저주스러운 운명을 지니게 된 것이다. 하지만 다행스럽게도 우리들의 운명은 여기서 끝나지 않는다. 왜냐하면 우리가 느꼈던 완전한 사랑, 천상에서 누렸던 영광에 대한 기억이 있기 때문이다. 

신은 아담과 이브를 쫓아낼 때 그의 인간에 대한 사랑을 완전히 버리신 것은 아닌 것 같다. 우리 중 누군가는 여전히 에덴동산에서 누렸던 완전한 사랑을 갈구하고 죽을 때는 천상의 영광을 회상하면 죽음의 공포를 극복할 수 있는 힘을 가지고 있으니까

 

나는 이러한 천상에 대한 기억을 우리 모두가 가지고 있는 공통의 노스탤지어라고 말하고 싶다. 노스탤지어, 그 느낌을 가장 잘 표현하는 미디어는 지금 현재는 기록매체인 사진 영상일 것이다. 그 이미지 속에는 과거와 현재, 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것이 함께 공존하며 그것을 바라보는 우리들을 끊임없이 기억의 블랙홀에 빠져들게 하는 마력이 있다. 

나는 이 매혹적인 매체의 셔터를 알 수 없는 욕망에 사로잡혀 수없이 눌러 댔다. 그것은 신중하게 목표물을 조준하여 수확물을 얻는 사냥꾼의 모습이라기 보다는 세상을 향해 무작위로 난사하며 우연히 얻게 될 기억의 파편들을 즐기려는 통제불능한 자의 모습에 가까왔다.  이렇게 얻게 된 일상의 조각들, 나는 이것들을 모아 의식의 흐름에 따라 다시 엮어서 또 하나의 세상 이미지로 만들어 보았다. 그리고 이 또 하나의 보여지는 세상속에서 보이지 않는 인간의 본질을 우리가 볼 수 있기를 기대해 본다. 

I believe the essence of humanity is love. 

This conclusion comes from long contemplation and reflection on human history, and it is also the central theme I have explored through my works. Among all the creatures God created, humanity was specially blessed, made to share in His glory and love. Had the incident with the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden never occurred, perhaps we would still be walking in Eden, enjoying an otherworldly peace unknown in this world. Unfortunately, however, Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, and instead of seeking forgiveness, they foolishly made cowardly excuses, blamed God, and betrayed each other. As a result, they were banished from Eden. (I wonder if they have lost themselves to the glory, rather than being kicked out of the Garden of Eden)

 

Having experienced betrayal in love and its resulting pain, Adam and Eve, and we, their descendants, have come to live hard lives on this earth, ultimately facing the cursed fate of death. Yet, our destiny does not end there. We have memories of the perfect love and glory we once experienced in heaven. When God cast Adam and Eve out of Eden, it seems He did not completely abandon His love for humanity. Some of us still long for the perfect love we once enjoyed in Eden, and the memory of heavenly glory gives us the strength to overcome the fear of death.

 

I would like to call this memory of heaven a shared nostalgia that we all carry. Nostalgia—this feeling, I believe, is best expressed through today’s media of photography and video. Within those images, the past and the present, the visible and the invisible coexist, drawing us endlessly into the black hole of memory. I have, almost uncontrollably, pressed the shutter of this captivating medium, driven by an unknown desire. Rather than being like a hunter carefully aiming for his target, I felt more like someone firing randomly into the world, enjoying the fragments of memory I happened to capture. These pieces of everyday life that I collected, I stitched together according to the flow of consciousness to create yet another image of the world. And in this new visible world, I hope we can glimpse the invisible essence of humanity.
